A brief background of the character:
Sajin Komamura joined the soul reapers in order to repay a debt to someone. When around others he kept his presence hidden and wore headgear of some fashion to hide his beast-like appearance. He befriended a man named Kaname Tosen who was also a soul reaper and they eventually both became captains with similar ideals.
During the Ryoka invasion of the soul society it was discovered that the captains Gin, Aizen and Tosen were traitors. Komamura was one of the first to challenge them but quickly fell before Aizen. As the traitors make their escape into the world of Hueco Mundo, Komamura asks Tosen where his sense of justice has gone, to which he responds that he is still following it. Feeling betrayed, Komamura vows to make Tosen see the truth himself. After these events he decides to stop hiding his face from the world.
Komamura's Zanpaku-to is called Tengen and has the power to summon pieces of a giant that mimic Komamura's movements. When he is taken in by the gate his powers are suppressed in much the same manner as they would be if he were to travel to the human world from the soul society (in other words, he is not an all-powerful avatar of destruction anymore).
